ALCAN Ma Murray Community
Newspaper Awards
For over 80 years, the BCYCNA has hosted the ALCAN Ma Murray
Community Newspaper Awards (formerly called the Better Newspapers
Competition), an annual awards event to celebrate the achievements
of our member newspapers. The popular awards celebrate all aspects
of newspaper production, including publishing, reporting, editing,
advertising, photography, and community contribution. A newer
award category recognizes excellence in website design.

This year, 87 of BCYCNA member newspapers entered the ALCAN Ma
Murray Community Newspaper Awards competition. Many of our judges
had a difficult time choosing the winners from the dozens of entries
they received.
The winners were announced at the awards gala evening in Vancouver
on May 31, 2003, as part of the joint CCNA-BCYCNA conference, East
Meets West.

Honoring Ma Murray
Margaret
'Ma' Murray, one of the most tenacious and outspoken figures in
Canadian journalism, continues to inspire the community newspaper
industry. She began her career in the 1930's, when she became British
Columbia's first female newspaper publisher. Through her beloved
paper, the Bridge River-Lillooet News, she became known throughout
B.C. as a forthright and outspoken critic of various topics of
the day.
Ma Murray never lost her enthusiasm and
commitment to her community and the newspaper business. Before
her death in 1982 at the age of 94, Ma Murray had owned and operated
two newspapers (The Bridge River-Lillooet News and The Alaska
Highway News); homesteaded in British Columbia's north; rubbed
shoulders with celebrities; appeared in Time Magazine; and won
the Order of Canada. She even had a play written about her, "Ma" by
Eric Nichol, which played to sold-out houses and rave reviews
across the country.
The BCYCNA changed the name of its awards gala in 2001 to honor
Ma, an important icon in B.C.'s community newspaper industry.
2002 Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards
Over 300 people attended the 2002 gala, and the BCYCNA handed out
over thirty awards. Click here to
