2010 SCHOLARSHIPS

Tenth Annual BCYCNA High School Scholarships

The 2010 competition is now closed. Watch this space in FEBRUARY 2011 for details and entry deadlines for upcoming scholarships.

This year, the BCYCNA distributed $5,000 in scholarships to graduating high school students across BC and Yukon.

Scholarships of $3,500, $1,000 and $500 are awarded to the three students who write the best 500-word essay answering the question:

“How could your local paper partner with the youth in your community to make a positive difference?”
(Note – this question changes each year.)

Sara Fischer was this year’s first place winner of $3,500, with an essay that was selected as a finalist by both the Langley Times and the Langley Advance. Judges said that Sara’s submission was “creatively-written” with “a clear and concise answer to the question.” Congratulations Sara!

Ryan Melvin, the finalist from Saanich News, took home second place and $1,000. Ryan’s essay was described by judges as having a “strong, engaging introduction,” and “a logical progression of ideas.” Well done, Ryan!

The third place award of $500 went to Eric Tran, the finalist selected by the Campbell River Courier-Islander. Judges “really liked the unique ideas Eric presented and how that could change stereotypes.” Nice work, Eric!

How To Apply:

The essay, along with an application form (which will be posted here in February 2011), must be submitted to the student's local community newspaper (click here for a list of our member papers). The local winner's submission will be forwarded to the BC and Yukon Community Newspapers Association for judging.

Finalists' essays are judged on: originality & creativity, writing ability (including spelling and grammar), and content (including demonstrating knowledge of the community newspaper industry).

Any graduating high school student is eligible to apply, regardless of their intended program of study, but they must be planning to attend a post-secondary institution.

The scholarships are presented at the students' graduation ceremonies by the publisher of their community newspaper.

Please note: submit your entries to your local community newspaper.
